Sheet P-801 · Sequence strip
How a siding job runs, day by day
A full re-side of a typical metro Atlanta house runs about one to two weeks of working days, weather permitting. The sequence below is what competent looks like; use it to read any proposal.
Day 0 — Measure, document, approve
Wall areas measured, elevations photographed, HOA/historic approvals in hand, materials and colours confirmed in writing, dumpster and access planned.
Days 1–2 — Tear-off
Old siding stripped elevation by elevation (never the whole house open ahead of weather), nails and debris cleared daily, disposal to the dumpster. Pre-1978 painted siding follows lead-safe practices.
Day 2–3 — Open-wall findings
Sheathing inspected; rotted sections replaced, flashing defects mapped. This is the legitimate change-order moment — documented with photographs before covering.
Days 3–4 — Barrier and flashing
Water-resistive barrier installed shingle-fashion, seams taped as specified, window and door flashing integrated, kick-out flashing at roof-wall junctions.
Days 4–8 — Siding courses
Starter and first courses set level — every later course inherits their line. Field siding hung per the manufacturer manual: clearances, gaps, nailing, and joint flashing as specified.
Days 8–10 — Trim, soffit, fascia
Corner boards, window trim, vented soffit, fascia cap or board, and transitions between materials drained and flashed.
Final days — Caulk, paint, walk
Sealant where the manual calls for it (and nowhere it forbids it), paint on primed product within its window, site magnet-swept for nails, and a joint walk-around elevation by elevation against the contract before final payment.
Hold points worth insisting on
Photographs of the open wall and of new flashing before they are covered; manufacturer install instructions on site; and final payment tied to the walk-around, not to the calendar. A contractor who welcomes all three is telling you something good.
